Relaunch and review

January 13, 2019 No Comments

Probably the hardest part about launching a career is juggling the other 3 jobs every day of the week.

I’m a new writer, and I’m still learning. I’ve also got bills to pay and not enough money to call myself independent. So when the chance comes for me to really make something good, like really good, I want to make sure it’s the best it can be. That’s why I’m writing this post now.

I had a hiatus from writing for a while. At the time a few job opportunities opened up and I went for them. That meant all the free time I had before to write would be entirely devoted to making money to pay the bills. That also meant that 50 hours out of my week were gone. And those hours got longer and longer as the holidays approached.

Has anyone here tried to work retail on Black Friday? Good God.

At least I had the time to step away from working on my books. Now I could look at them from the perspective of someone reading this text with fresh eyes.

Of the four books I currently have on Amazon, the first one is the most “successful.” I believe the pacing was good and the writing was serviceable for what it was. But I can’t say the same for my most recent books. Recently I got in touch with another novelist who ripped apart my first paragraph (for an agonizing hour) to prove a point: I pushing these novels out too fast and wasn’t leaving enough time to really make the text have personality or charm.

So what does that mean now?

Well, I’m slowing down with my writing schedule. (My quota before was 2000 words a day.) Relax, I’m still writing regularly every day. But that means I’ll have to make sure what I make is still good content.  And that brings me to my next point: I’m relaunching my most recent book.

This was something I wanted to be good. Really, REALLY good. It was an idea I had for years and had to refine in a state of madness to make sure it was something tangible and for others to read.

And upon reading the novel in its current state, I realized that I was being overly ambitious. There wasn’t a story so much as a lot of descriptive text. One reader couldn’t figure out where the Main Character was standing on the first chapter.

So I’m going to take another look at the book, and make sure it’s worthy of being a novel. That means a lot of revisions and a lot of work on my end. The Writing process doesn’t stop for a writer, and there are a lot of ideas in my head. I have to get them down on paper to make sure that I can share what I can imagine with everyone.

With that said, I want to share a preview of what heavily revising a book can really look like. Click the link below to see what I mean.

Wish me luck, guys! I’m heading out to another job in an hour. With any luck, this new relaunched book will be released before the beginning of March.

Sol: The True Self is Available Now!

September 7, 2018 No Comments

Have you been waiting for your fix of fresh and fun fiction? It’s here!

Sol: The True Self is available on Amazon Kindle and free with Kindle Unlimited. Get your copy today!

So how do I write so much in a relatively short amount of time?

It’s called “Sprint Writing,” a wonderful technique I learned from the talented Jonathan Yanez (Author of the Gateway to the Galaxy Series and the War Wolves Series. Look him up if you haven’t already).
Sprint Writing works like this. I actively remove most distractions and make myself write for 30 continuous minutes. I can get at least 1000 words in before the timer is up. And BOOM. One chapter is done.

Now imagine me doing this at least twice a day for two weeks.
A first draft of a 20+ Chapter Book already done o.o

New Book in the Works!

August 10, 2018 No Comments

We Make our Worst Demons
And They are Ravenous
********

What if I told you that I was working on an Urban Fantasy Too?

That’s right. I’m expanding my genre to do more than Sci-Fi. As much as I love the Renegade Series, there’s always another story I want to tell. And where’s the fun in doing one genre when I can expand it further?  I say do both!

Sol: The True Self will go on sale August 20th.

What’s Joshua Been Up To?

Renegade Series Hi Rez Titles Cropped

After a long absence from this site, I think it’s time to give a brief history of what I’ve been up to for the last year:

July/August 2017 – Went to Thailand and Japan, respectively. Tried out a TEFL course to teach English as a foreign language. If there was a silver lining, I learned that teaching was not the right kind of job for me.

September/December 2017 – Picked up part-time work at three different professions: after-school tutoring, teacher assistant bookkeeping, and part-time English tutoring.

January 2018 – Decided to turn my life around: I’d like to thank Jonathan Yanez for pointing me in the right direction for being a self-published author. My life turned around then, and I started writing once more while keeping up with my other jobs.

February 2018 – Finished my first revision of Gladiator (2018), which is the story that inspired Fallen Son (2016). This was my first publication on Amazon.

March 2018 – Finished my first revision of Rebellion (2018), which is the story that inspired Fallen Son (2017). A significant amount of text was added based on the screenplay.

April/May 2018 – Finished my first draft of Legionary (2018), a brand new story where I dipped my toes into the Renegade Series once more. I also picked up a new job as an HP Sales Rep, which helped pay the bills between my ongoing writing projects.

June/July 2018 – Edited and published Gladiator and Rebellion on Amazon, respectively. Learned how to market and attract traffic to the two books.

Which brings us to August. It’s a new month, and I’ve restructured my schedule to post more frequently on social media. Now there are alternative handles to see what I’m working on.

Updating

June 24, 2017 No Comments

Updates will come depending on how busy I am and how many new projects come up. At the time of this post, I’ve got a TV show in the works and an unannounced idea bouncing around between me and two other writers. The most recent addition is the Art Gallery tab.

What is the new tab? The Art Gallery is a showcase for my most recent digital works of art. Granted I’m improving (every ambitious artist is), but It’s to show what I can do with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Credits are listed for each picture, and a link to my more updated art page is provided there!

First Post!

To start off, this is my online portfolio. Its purpose is to give others an idea of what I’m working on and what I’ve done already. There are tabs with obvious titles to what they have, so feel take a look around to learn more.

Well, that’s enough talking from the first post you’re probably reading. I mean you’re already on my site to see what I’ve got.

So go nuts!
